Climbing and Wall Shrubs
At Ingatestone Garden Centre we carry a wide range of climbers suitable for all purposes and aspects. These include Clematis, Climbing Roses, Honeysuckles and Shrubs suitable for training plus a full range of other climbing plants.

We stock the following aids to ensure you achieve the very best from our climbers:

  • Soil improvers and fertilisers
  • Root grow
  • Sprays and weed killers
  • Secateurs and pruners
  • Trellis and arbours
  • Climber fixings and ties and supports
  • Obelisks
  • Information leaflets and books

Climbers and wall shrubs are grouped into four sections:

  • Rose Climbers and Ramblers
  • Clematis
  • Annual climbers
  • All other climbing and wall shrub plants

All climbers add a vertical dimension to a garden. They can be used to cover unsightly buildings and fences; add colour to a tree or hedge; add drama and scent to the brick wall of a house or garage or simply to be grown in a container and trailed up an obelisk on a patio. Some climbers, like Wisteria and Vines look spectacular grown over a pergola as their flowers/fruit descend through the structure so can be seen to perfection whilst providing shade for those beneath.

We have a comprehensive range of climbers to choose from, with peak stock at the corresponding flowering times. If you are looking for an easy and fast growing clematis then look at our Montana range. These flower in spring and require no routine pruning. Other easy to grow groups are the alpine and Macropetala, they are less vigorous and do not grow so tall as Montanas; they generally flower twice a year and develop attractive seed heads which attract birds.

Do not be afraid to plant more than one climber in a suitable sized, well prepared hole. This can overcome the problem of only having flowers at one time of year, as, for example you can choose a spring and an autumn flowering climber. We are often asked for evergreen climbers but these are limited for choice, owing to hardiness. One way of overcoming this is to grow an ivy with a
deciduous climber. If an evergreen climber is your priority, we would recommend Hydrangea Seemannii for a shady site and Trachelospermum jasminoides for a sunny position. Evergreen clematis include the large leaved, strong-growing Armandii and the petite fern-leaved Cirnhosoas. These clematis all flower in winter/early spring.

All clematis should be planted deeper than the soil level in the pot. Their roots should be shaded.

Together with the traditional clematis we stock Evison patio clematis which have been bred for their suitability for planting in containers; their long flowering period and ‘top and bottom’ blooms.

Some of our most popular rose climbers are in the David Austin range. These arrive in April. We have chosen to stock those with the best perfume ratings. Other more traditional rose climbing varieties together with new releases, are stocked throughout the year, with growers releasing their cut back new stock in October.

If you require a plant that we normally stock, but it is temporarily unavailable you can leave your plant request together with your contact details. We will then contact you when the plant is available.
